12 mar 2007 · Nov. 6, 1924—At a dinner announcing plans for a new academic building to be erected on Frick Acres, a rectangular plot of land between Fifth and Forbes avenues and a block south of Pitt’s campus, Bowman for the first time refers to the new building as “a cathedral of learning.”
The Cathedral of Learning is the iconic landmark of the University of Pittsburgh. The Gothic Revival skyscraper was commissioned in 1921 and is a landmark listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Lovingly referred to as “Cathy”, it stands at 535- feet-tall, the second-tallest educational building in the world.
