Warren Earl Burger (September 17, 1907 – June 25, 1995) was an American attorney and jurist who served as the 15th chief justice of the United States from 1969 to 1986. Born in Saint Paul, Minnesota, Burger graduated from the St. Paul College of Law in 1931.

President Eisenhower appointed Warren Burger to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit in 1955, where he served as a federal judge for 13 years. Earl Warren resigned as Chief Justice of the United States in 1969, and it was President Richard Nixon’s responsibility to appoint a new Chief Justice.

Earl Warren’s successor, Warren Burger, a native of Minnesota, had been a judge of the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit for more than a decade. He became Chief Justice in 1969.
