In December 1882, Mollie confided in her diary, “I believe I am in love.”. The object of her affection was Joe Brown, who had been her father’s private secretary, and was nine years older than Mollie. After Garfield’s death, Joe helped Mrs. Garfield collect and organize the late president’s papers.
The papers of Joseph Stanley-Brown, presidential secretary, civil servant, and banker, were given to the Library of Congress by Stanley-Brown in 1926. Additions were given by his daughter, Ruth Stanley-Brown Feis, between 1961 and 1970, and by Ronald S. Hobar in 1981. Processing History

There are large numbers of letters about the papers in Mrs. Garfield's papers from 1881 to 1885, when Joseph Stanley-Brown had them at his home in Washington at 1318 Massachusetts Avenue NW. He built a fireproof room for them and worked out a security alarm which would go off in his bedroom.
