Augustus Gregory è il secondo di cinque fratelli, nati da Joshua Gregory e Frances Churchman. Uno dei suoi fratelli era Francis Thomas Gregory, divenuto anch'egli un noto esploratore. Gregory viene istruito privatamente da tutori, e più tardi da sua madre.
Sir Augustus Charles Gregory KCMG FRSGS (1 August 1819 – 25 June 1905) was an English-born Australian explorer and surveyor. Between 1846 and 1858 he undertook four major expeditions. He was the first Surveyor-General of Queensland.

In 1855–56 Augustus Charles Gregory, described by a contemporary as “a most competent leader…with great firmness of purpose,” led a well-organized expedition from the plains of the Victoria River eastward across the territory to the Queensland coast.
