Sottotenente di fanteria nel 1880, fu poi ufficiale di stato maggiore; nel 1896 andò in Cina come istruttore di quell'esercito; nel 1900 fece parte del corpo di spedizione tedesco contro la Cina stessa; rimpatriò nel 1903.
