Silas Deane (January 4, 1738 [O.S. December 24, 1737] – September 23, 1789) was an American merchant, politician, and diplomat, and a supporter of American independence.
Silas Deane was the first U.S. diplomat sent abroad (1776), who helped secure much-needed French aid for the American Revolutionary cause. Admitted to the bar in 1761, Deane served as a delegate from Connecticut to the Continental Congress in Philadelphia (1774–76).
