L'edificio venne costruito secondo il progetto di Franz Schwechten (membro dell' Accademia di architettura e già noto per la realizzazione della stazione ferroviaria di Berlino-Anhalt) in stile neoromanico, ispirandosi alle numerose chiese romaniche presenti nella valle del Reno, tra cui il duomo di Bonn.
