On 17 April 1694, she married the 1st Duke of St Albans, an illegitimate son of King Charles II and his mistress Nell Gwynne, whereupon Diana became Duchess of St Albans.

Lady Diana de Vere was the daughter and sole heiress of Aubrey (Vere) de Vere KG PC (1627-1703), the 20th (and last) Earl of Oxford and Diana (Kirke) de Vere (abt.1655-abt.1719). Her grandmother was Nell Gwynne. She was born 16 January 1679.
