Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari GCFR (Hausa pronunciation ⓘ; 25 February 1925 – 28 December 2018) was a Nigerian politician who was the first democratically elected president of Nigeria, after the transfer of power by military head of state General Olusegun Obasanjo in 1979 giving rise to the Second Nigerian Republic.

Shehu Shagari was the only president of Nigeria's Second Republic, which lasted from 1979 to 1983, when he was overthrown by a military coup led by Muhammadu Buhari. He was a devout Muslim, a former finance minister, and a victim of corruption and economic crisis.
