Dhul-Nun al-Misri is considered among the most prominent saints of early Sufism and holds a position in the Sufi chronicles as high as Junayd Baghdadi (d. 910) and Bayazid Bastami (d. 874). He studied under various teachers and travelled extensively in Arabia and Syria.

Dhu'l Nun al-Misri al-Akhmimi, the ascetic, was a philosopher who pursued a course of his own in religion. He was one of those who elucidate the history of these temple-ruins (barabi). He roamed among them and examined a great quantity of figures and inscriptions.

Sayyidina Dhul-Nun Al-Misri. He is Thawban Ibn Ibrahim Abu al-Fayd and was known as Dhul-Nun al-Misri. He was born in Ikhmim in the governorate of Suhag, Upper Egypt which he left for Fustat (Cairo) seeking knowledge until he became the greatest scholar and ascetic of his time.
