Ernst Johann von Biron (German: Ernst Johann von Biron; Russian: Эрнст Иоганн Бирон; (German: Bühren); 23 November [O.S. 13 November] 1690 – 29 December [O.S. 18 December] 1772) was a Duke of Courland and Semigallia (1737–1740 and 1763–1769) and briefly regent of the Russian Empire in 1740.
Ernst Johann, Reichsgraf von Biron was a German adventurer who became Duke of Courland and chief adviser to the Russian empress Anna (reigned 1730–40); he exercised extraordinary influence over Russian affairs during a period that became known as Bironovshchina.

Biographie Ernst Johann, Herzog von Kurland, geboren den 23.November 1690, † den 18. Decbr. 1772. Er stammte aus einer wenigstens seit 1564 in Kurland heimischen Familie Büren, welche zwar vom polnischen Könige Wladislaw 1638 geadelt, aber nicht in die kurländische Ritterschaft aufgenommen worden war.

Having become her favourite, he exerted strong influence on the administration of the Duchy for nearly twenty years. In 1730 Anna Ioannovna became Empress of Russia and granted Biron the title of Count and senior chamberlain’s position.
