John Cromwell Mather (Roanoke, 7 agosto 1946) è un astrofisico e cosmologo statunitense. Mather è astrofisico capo al Goddard Space Flight Center della NASA nel Maryland. Inoltre è professore aggiunto all'Università del Maryland, College Park.
John Cromwell Mather (born August 7, 1946, Roanoke, Virginia) is an American astrophysicist, cosmologist and Nobel Prize in Physics laureate for his work on the Cosmic Background Explorer Satellite (COBE) with George Smoot.
Dr. John C. Mather is a Senior Astrophysicist in the Observational Cosmology Laboratory at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. His research centers on infrared astronomy and cosmology.
The Nobel Prize in Physics 2006 was awarded jointly to John C. Mather and George F. Smoot "for their discovery of the blackbody form and anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background radiation"
Nel progetto Mather è attualmente capo della parte scientifica. Oltre a ciò propose insieme a David Leisawitz una missione chiamata SPECS (Submillimeter Probe of the Evolution of Cosmic Structure) con un interferometro nel lontano infrarosso, ora evoluta nel progetto SAFIR (Single Aperture Far InfraRed telescope) destinato a succedere a JWST.
