We get to know other residents of the town; we meet Amos's sobriety counsellor, Ma Dolly, who is the only person in Hopeville looking after numerous abandoned children in the township Halala. We get an insight into the corrupt mayor's unhappy marriage and see how Amos's growing interest in the mayor's mistress, Fikile.
