Friedrich August Moritz Retzsch was born in 1779, and trained as an artist at the Dresden Academy of Art. At first he followed the Neoclassical style which predominated there, producing history paintings in the classical mode. But in his own person he embodies the contemporary shift towards Romanticism.
Moritz Retzsch, like many artists of his generation, was fascinated by Faust. Die Schachspieler, while not an explicitly Faustian episode, is full of Faustian flavour in its rich allegory of the Devil's battle for a man's soul.
