Thomas Gainsborough (baptized May 14, 1727, Sudbury, Suffolk, Eng.—died August 2, 1788, London) was a portrait and landscape painter, the most versatile English painter of the 18th century. Some of his early portraits show the sitters grouped in a landscape ( Mr. and Mrs. Andrews, c. 1750).

Biography. Thomas Gainsborough was born in Sudbury, Suffolk, the youngest of the nine children of John Gainsborough and the sister of the Reverend Humphry Burroughs; he was baptized in Sudbury on 14 May 1727. He attended Sudbury Grammar School, of which his maternal uncle was the master.
