Justus Sustermans, conosciuto anche col nome di Giusto e con la variante Suttermans ( Anversa, 28 settembre 1597 – Firenze, 23 aprile 1681 ), è stato un pittore fiammingo di stile barocco .
Justus Sustermans, Joost Sustermans or Suttermans, his given name Italianised to Giusto (28 September 1597 – 23 April 1681), was a Flemish painter and draughtsman who is mainly known for his portraits. He also painted history and genre paintings, still lifes and animals.
Pittore (Anversa 1597 - Firenze 1681). Studiò ad Anversa con W. de Vos e a Parigi (1617-19) con F. Pourbus il Giovane.
Il ritratto di Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) è uno dei più celebri di Suttermans. Lo aveva commissionato Elia Diodati (1576- 1661), un giurista di origini lucchesi vissuto tra Ginevra e Parigi, caro amico dello scienziato.
Nato ad Anversa, Justus Sustermans fu un pittore dallo stile aperto, che prese elementi da pittori fiamminghi, francesi, spagnoli e veneziani, del periodo barocco. Rimane noto anche come Giusto Sustermas, dal suo periodo a Firenze sotto il patrocinio della famiglia Medici.
17 giu 2024 · Justus Sustermans. 1597 - 1681. Sustermans was born in Antwerp. In about 1616 he went to Paris. In 1619 or 1620 he was in Florence where he became court painter to the Grand Dukes of Tuscany. He also worked in Vienna, Innsbruck, Rome, Parma and other Italian cities. He was a portrait and figure painter.
Biography. Baptized in Antwerp on 28 September 1597, Justus (Josse; Juste) Sustermans (Suttermans; Susterman) was the son of Frans Sustermans, a draper from Bruges, and his wife, Esther Scheepmans.
