Dal 1872 visse negli USA, pur conservando la cittadinanza spagnola; nel 1889 si laureò alla Harvard University, dove poi (1898-1911) insegnò; soggiornò quindi in Inghilterra e in Francia e passò gli ultimi anni di vita a Roma.
