Thomas Middleton (baptised 18 April 1580 – July 1627; also spelt Midleton) was an English Jacobean playwright and poet. He, with John Fletcher and Ben Jonson, was among the most successful and prolific of playwrights at work in the Jacobean period, and among the few to gain equal success in comedy and tragedy.
Thomas Middleton (born April? 1580, London, Eng.—died July 4, 1627, Newington Butts, Surrey) was a late-Elizabethan dramatist who drew people as he saw them, with comic gusto or searching irony. By 1600 Middleton had spent two years at Oxford and had published three books of verse.

British Renaissance playwright Thomas Middleton wrote comedy, history, tragedy, and tragicomedy. After Middleton’s father died in 1586, his mother, Anne, married a man who had lost money in Sir Walter Raleigh’s Roanoke venture.
