Charles Edwin Woodrow Bean (18 November 1879 – 30 August 1968), usually identified as C. E. W. Bean, was a historian and one of Australia's official war correspondents.
The boy was Charles Edwin Woodrow Bean. His experience at Waterloo was a foretaste of the labours that would occupy most of his adult life: the establishment of the Australian War Memorial and the writing of the official history of Australia during the First World War.
Australia's Prime Minister, Andrew Fisher, made the first report of the Anzac landing by Australia's official war correspondent, Charles Bean, available to the public on 17 May 1915. In September 1914, each dominion was invited to attach an official correspondent to its forces.

Charles Bean was Australia’s official war correspondent who later wrote and edited the twelve-volume Official History of Australia in the War of 1914-1918 and founded the Australian War Memorial.
Thin, bespectacled, and steeped in Victorian values, Bean was a close observer of the Australian soldiers. He cannot be credited with creating the ANZAC legend for the troops did that, but he enshrined it for a receptive public in his volumes of the Official history of Australia in the war of 1914–18 .
