Figlio d'un pastore protestante, studiò diritto nell'univ. di Tubinga, prima di trasferirsi a Zurigo (1752) su invito di J. J. Bodmer. Tornò in Svevia, a Biberach, nel 1760, essendo stato nominato senatore e direttore della cancelleria della piccola libera repubblica.
