Vita. Figlio di un perseguitato dal nazismo e poi dal comunismo, nel 1947 si iscrisse al partito di Unità Socialista di Germania e nel 1954 iniziò a lavorare per l’Associazione tedesca degli scrittori, da cui venne espulso nel 1961 quando la sua opera Die Umsiedlerin oder Das Leben auf dem Lande venne censurata alla prima rappresentazione.
