No. of graves. 1,600,000. Website. beheshtezahra .tehran .ir. Behesht-e Zahra ( Persian: بهشت زهرا, lit. The Paradise of Zahra, from Fatima az-Zahra) is the largest cemetery in Iran. Located in the southern part of metropolitan Tehran, [1] it is connected to the city by Tehran Metro Line 1 .
The mausoleum is located to the south of Tehran in the Behesht-e Zahra (Paradise of Zahra) cemetery. Construction commenced in 1989 following Khomeini's death on June 3 of that year.
Khomeini was given a state funeral and buried at the Behesht-e Zahra (The Paradise of Zahra) cemetery in south Tehran. It was estimated that around 10 million people participated in his funeral, one-sixth of the population of Iran, which is the largest proportion of a population ever to attend a funeral procession and also one of the largest gatherings in human history.
BEHEŠT -E ZAHRĀʾ, the chief cemetery of Tehran and principal shrine of the Islamic Revolution of 1357 Š./1978-79. Its name, “the Paradise of [Fāṭema] the Resplendent,” is by way of allusion to the Jannat al-Baqīʿ cemetery in Medina, where the Prophet’s daughter is generally believed to be buried.

Behesht-e Zahra, Tehran’s only active cemetery for Muslims of the city, has rapidly grown in its mere forty years of operation. Despite its significant distance to the urban fabric, it is nonetheless present in the lives of all Iranians who see the cemetery reflected in the media as a location of high importance to the Islamic Republic.
