Lafayette, Ind. Lafayette, city, seat (1826) of Tippecanoe county, west-central Indiana, U.S., on the Wabash River, 63 miles (101 km) northwest of Indianapolis. Laid out by William Digby on May 24, 1825, it was named for the American Revolutionary War hero the marquis de Lafayette, who was then making his last visit to the United States.
Upper Main Street Historic District is a national historic district located at Lafayette, Tippecanoe County, Indiana. Sixth Street was the City of Lafayette's eastern boundary when it was originally platted. By 1840, the boundary was extended to include Lake Erie and Wabash Railroad at Eleventh Street.
