As a small part of an even larger global Christian church, the Methodist Church is Ireland shares core beliefs with those who follow Jesus around the world. Even so, there are some distinctives that shape what it means to be a Methodist in Ireland today.
The Methodist Church in Ireland is a community of people drawn together by God’s love who seek to live wholeheartedly as followers of Jesus for the transformation of the world. We are a connexion of 200 churches (societies) spread across the island of Ireland from North to South, from East to West with a membership of around 50,000.
Methodist" was originally a nickname applied to a revival movement in 18th century Britain, based within the Church of England and led by, among others, the brothers John and Charles Wesley. John went on to undertake numerous preaching tours of Britain and Ireland (it is estimated he travelled more than 250,000 miles on houseback).
