Das heutige Pforzheim entstand aus einer kleinen römischen Siedlung, die um das Jahr 90 n. Chr. gegründet wurde. Als kleine Anlegestelle an der Enz trug sie den Namen Portus (lateinisch für "Hafen"). Daher stammt auch die heutige Bezeichnung von Pforzheim als "Pforte zum Schwarzwald".
