Der Kreis Unna liegt im Zentrum des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen im Regierungsbezirk Arnsberg. Er existiert dem Namen nach seit dem 17. Oktober 1930 (durch Umbenennung des Landkreises Hamm) und im jetzigen Zuschnitt seit dem 1. Januar 1975. Er ist Mitglied im Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe und im Regionalverband Ruhr.
