Metairie, Jefferson Parish’s largest community, is located on the south shore of Lake Pontchartrain between New Orleans and Kenner. 'Metairie' is the French term for a small tenant farm that paid the landlord with a share of the produce, also known as sharecropping.
Metairie is similar to New Orleans in many ways, but it is not located in Orleans Parish and it is locally governed by the Council of the Parish of Jefferson, not by a separate city council or police jury.
