  4. Frans van Schooten jr. werd rond 1615 geboren in Leiden. In 1631 ging hij studeren aan de universiteit van Leiden, waar hij onder andere les kreeg van zijn vader, die wiskundige was. Toen zijn vader ziek werd in 1635 viel Van Schooten jr. voor hem in: hij gaf les op de Leidse ingenieursschool.
