Butler si approccia al basso in giovinezza, influenzato soprattutto dallo stile del suo idolo Jack Bruce dei Cream. Inizialmente studiava per diventare ragioniere, ma la passione per la musica lo fece deviare dal progetto iniziale. La carriera solista e il ritorno nei Sabbath
