Joe Bruin, an anthropomorphic male brown bear, is the official mascot of the University of California, Los Angeles’ athletic teams along with Josephine "Josie" Bruin, a female brown bear, who is his regular partner at UCLA sporting events and other university activities.
20 lug 2023 · Joe and Josephine Bruin are such beloved mascots that it’s hard to imagine a time when UCLA had a different mascot. But it actually wasn’t until 1926 that the university settled on the Bruins. Even after the mascot was chosen, the Bruin image changed quite a bit over the years.
1 lug 2011 · Joe’s costumes and depictions have evolved over the years, from a Mickey Mouse-looking Bruin in the 1930s to a smiling Joe (known today as Retro Joe) in the ’70s. Joe’s current design, unveiled in 1996, marks its 15th anniversary this September.

Since his creation in 1947, Joe Bruin has become an iconic symbol of school spirit and a source of pride for the UCLA community.
In 1967, the first female student to take the mascot role created Josephine "Josie" Bruin and joined Joe at athletic events. The design for the costumed bears has changed over the years, and Joe has had at least six looks over his history.
