Welcome to Mayfly Central! Acentrella turbida. Atnarka River, British Columbia. Mayfly Central was launched on the web in 1995 and was the first site available on the internet dedicated to information about any single order of insects; in this instance, the Ephemeroptera (or mayflies).
They help us look after over 2,300 nature reserves and protect the animals that call them home. Also known as the 'green drake mayfly', the common mayfly can be found around unpolluted wetlands, such as lakes and rivers. It has transparent, lacy wings and three long 'tails'.
Despite their name, mayflies are active during the warmer months of the year, not just May. They tend to be gray, yellow, or brown and have long, thin abdomens. Mayfly larvae are aquatic and found in nearly all types of water bodies, from streams to lakes.
