Biografia. Nato a Paisley in Scozia come sesto di sette figli, all'età di 2 anni si trasferisce con la sua famiglia in Canada. Nel 1998 e 1999 ha insegnato presso la Vancouver Film School. Dal 2004 lavora nella serie di fantascienza Stargate Atlantis nel ruolo del medico scozzese Carson Beckett.

Nella seconda stagione di Atlantis, Paul McGillion (Carson Bekett) e Jason Momoa (Ronon Dex, che rimpiazza il personaggio di Francks) sono aggiunti al cast regolare.
