In 1935 Selznick left MGM to form his own production company, Selznick International Pictures. He also took over the operation of Pioneer Pictures, a production company designed to produce films in Technicolor and formed by his friend and ex-associate (at RKO) Merian C. Cooper.

Ce studio produisit notamment Autant en emporte le vent , le « film aux huit Oscars », qui, après correction de l' inflation , est considéré comme le plus gros succès de l'histoire du cinéma avec 1 250 000 000 de dollars américains de recettes [ 1 ] .
