St Andrew's Orthodox Church is an Orthodox church located in the Southside, Edinburgh, Scotland. Edinburgh's Orthodox community was founded in 1948 and has, since 2013, occupied the former Buccleuch Parish Church, which was founded as a chapel of ease of St Cuthbert's in 1756 and closed in 1969.
At that time, the church covered an extensive parish, which was gradually reduced until the 20th century by the erection and expansion of other parishes, many of which were founded as chapels of ease of St Cuthbert's.
Whilst the church was formally a "chapel of ease" - reducing the burden on the main church - the distance to St Cuthbert's was such that a new church was easily justified. What is somewhat odd, is that the church was built largely pre-emptively, rather than in reaction to a growing population (as was the norm). [failed verification]
It was created in 1820 in the parish of St Cuthbert's, who had an overflow Chapel of Ease on Buccleuch Street, with its own graveyard. The additional burial ground was organised by the kirk session.
St Cuthbert's is situated within a large churchyard that bounds Princes Street Gardens and Lothian Road. A church was probably founded on this site during or shortly after the life of Cuthbert. The church is first recorded in 1128, when David I granted it to Holyrood Abbey.
The Church of St Mary Magdalene was erected as a chapel of ease to St Cuthbert's Church in Wells.
