An auteur (/ oʊ ˈ t ɜːr /; French:, lit. 'author') is an artist with a distinctive approach, usually a film director whose filmmaking control is so unbounded and personal that the director is likened to the "author" of the film, thus manifesting the director's unique style or thematic focus.
What Is Auteur Theory. Auteur theory is a term that was created by François Truffaut (drawing on work by French film critic Andre Bazin), where he argued that the director of a film should be considered the author. This idea has been challenged and debated in many different ways over time.
