Local anaesthesia involves numbing an area of the body using a type of medicine called a local anaesthetic. These medicines can be used to treat painful conditions, prevent pain during a procedure or operation, or relieve pain after surgery.

The use of local anaesthetics by injection or by application to mucous membranes to produce local analgesia is discussed in this section. Local anaesthetic drugs act by causing a reversible block to conduction along nerve fibres.
Local anaesthetic works by blocking the way nerves carry pain signals to the brain. As the local anaesthetic wears off you may find that you have a tingling or burning sensation. The length of time that the local anaesthetic takes to wear off depends on what type of anaesthetic was used. It usually lasts for approximately 4 - 6 hours.
Information for patients. This booklet is for adults who are expecting to have a surgical procedure under anaesthetic. It gives you information about anaesthesia and suggests where you can find out more. It has been written by patients, patient representatives and anaesthetists, working in partnership.
Local anaesthetic. This can be in the form of drops, sprays, ointments or injections to numb a part of your body. In eye surgery, drops – alone or combined with a small injection to the eye – will make thefront of the eye numb and free from pain. This is commonly referred to as ‘freezing’ the eye. You will remain conscious throughout the procedure.
