An Interdisciplinary Case for a Peninsular Origin of the Japanese Language. Alexander Francis-Ratte. This paper draws on linguistics and the various human sciences to show that the Japanese language was spoken on the Korean peninsula before it was spoken in the Japanese archipelago.
There is fragmentary evidence suggesting that now-extinct Japonic languages were spoken in the central and southern parts of the Korean peninsula. Vovin calls these languages Peninsular Japonic and groups Japanese and Ryukyuan as Insular Japonic .
It rightly emphasizes that Japanese is only one sub-branch of the so called Insular Japonic. The other Japonic languages, once spoken in the Korean peninsula and recorded in fragmentary evidence, consisting mostly of toponyms, form instead the Peninsular Japonic branch of the Japonic family.
