Hammer producer Anthony Nelson Keys, in an effort to save money, had decided to shoot four films on the same sets with staggered release dates. [3] [4] Three of the films, Dracula: Prince of Darkness (1966), The Plague of the Zombies (1966) and Rasputin the Mad Monk (1966) were completed before The Reptile could begin filming.
