Meekatharra is a major supply centre for the pastoral and mining area in the Murchison region of Western Australia. Meekatharra is located 775 km north-east of Perth via the Great Northern Highway. It is 536 km north-east of Geraldton and 521 m above sea level.
It is widely accepted that 'meekatharra' is a Yamatji Aboriginal word meaning "little water" or "place of little water" which seems appropriate given the low rainfall in the area.
