The Hypothesis of the Stolen Painting (French: L'Hypothèse du tableau volé) is a 1978 French surrealist experimental mystery film directed by Chilean filmmaker Raúl Ruiz and shot by cinematographer Sacha Vierny.

An art collector guides an interviewer around six paintings by Frederic Tonnerre, an academic 19th century painter, in an attempt to solve the mysterious disappearance of a seventh painting. The film presents the paintings as tableaux vivants in which the actors hold poses as they are examined.
The collector proposes that a missing seventh painting is key to clearing up the ambiguity, while an unseen narrator has some different ideas.
