History. Founded in 1871 by the suffragist Frances Mary Buss, who also founded North London Collegiate School, the Camden School for Girls was one of the first girls' schools in England. Although not a fee-paying school by then, girls in the mid-20th century wore a traditional uniform of dark green, with blue and green striped ties.
Frances Mary Buss and Sophie Bryant. In 1875 Bryant became a teacher and was invited by Frances Mary Buss to join the staff of North London Collegiate School. In 1895 she succeeded Miss Buss as headmistress of North London Collegiate, serving until 1918.

She then went on to establish the North London Collegiate School for Girls with an insistence on high standards.
18 apr 2024 · Frances Mary Buss was the founder of the first modern girls’ secondary school and a campaigner for women’s rights. Her blue plaque can be found on Sandall Road in Camden at Camden School for Girls, which was the second school she founded.
