Il gruppo nacque nel 1971 per opera dei fondatori Glenn Frey ( chitarra) e Don Henley ( batteria ), già membri della band di supporto di Linda Ronstadt, con l'aggiunta di Bernie Leadon (chitarra, banjo e mandolino) e Randy Meisner ( basso ). Con questa formazione il gruppo pubblicò nel 1972 il primo album, Eagles.
