Il n'a pas trois ans quand sa famille — dont le père est ouvrier agricole, puis mécanicien auto — « s'installe dans un quartier polonais pauvre de Chicago, la ville où il va grandir et vivre presque toute sa vie » 1. Pour payer ses études à l' Université de l'Illinois, Algren exerce divers petits métiers, tout en pratiquant la boxe.
