The Jew of Malta was an immediate success from its first recorded performance at the Rose Theatre in early 1592, when Edward Alleyn played the lead role. The play was subsequently presented by Alleyn's Lord Strange's Men seventeen times between 26 February 1592 and 1 February 1593.

The Life of Edward Alleyn (1566 - 1626) Edward Alleyn is considered one of the greatest actors of Shakespeare's time. Born the son of a London innkeeper, Alleyn began his acting career in his late teens when he joined the provincial troupe the Earl of Worcester's Men.
Edward Alleyn performed the role of Tamburlaine, and it apparently became one of his signature roles. The play's popularity, significant enough to prompt Marlowe to produce the sequel, led to numerous stagings over the next decade.
Edward Alleyn was the leading player in the Admiral's Men, and was considered by many to have been the greatest actor* of his time. His credits include the title roles in Tamburlaine and Dr. Faustus, and Barabas in The Jew of Malta.
