16 giu 2023 · Gloucester’s prosperity during the 1670s-1720s, was founded on tobacco grown by enslaved Africans. As a result, the county became home to many plantations. In 1769, a new town was established by act of the General Assembly of Virginia to be located on land surrounding the courthouse.
