Handsome Dan XIX (Photo credit: Dan Renzetti) In dogged pursuit of greater joy for the members of its community, Yale University today announced the arrival in New Haven of the puppy who will assume the title and responsibilities of Handsome Dan XIX, the latest bulldog to serve as Yale’s famed live mascot.
Handsome Dan XIX, also known as Kingman, serves as the official mascot for Yale University. Born on January 2, 2021, he was picked out of a litter of nine Olde English Bulldogge puppies by Kassandra Haro ’18 on the Yale Visitor Center team.

The latest Yalie canine, Handsome Dan XIX, may have arrived in March 2021, but the tradition of maintaining a resident bulldog goes back to the 1890s, when the school became the first institution to embrace a live animal as an athletic team mascot.

The first Yale bulldog, as every Yale history enthusiast knows, was Handsome Dan, bought by Yale student Andrew Barbey Graves in 1889 from a New Haven blacksmith. Dan became the athletics mascot, and because of him, to this day Yale sports competitions and other events are attended by a real bulldog on a leash—Handsome Dan XVII.
