Gaius Julius Hyginus (/ h ɪ ˈ dʒ aɪ n ə s /; c. 64 BC – AD 17) was a Latin author, a pupil of the scholar Alexander Polyhistor, and a freedman of Caesar Augustus. He was elected superintendent of the Palatine library by Augustus according to Suetonius' De Grammaticis, 20.

14 mar 2024 · St. Hyginus (born, Greece?—died c. 140, Rome [Italy]; feast day January 11) was the pope from about 136 to about 140. Hyginus had been a philosopher, possibly in Athens, before moving to Rome. The Liber pontificalis credits him with organizing the hierarchy (ranks of the ruling body of clergy), but the same claim is made for Hormisdas.

He went to Rome from Spain or Alexandria as a slave or perhaps a prisoner of war and was freed by Augustus.
