Hart (born December 6, 1864, Newburgh, New York, U.S.—died June 23, 1946, Newhall, California) was an American stage and silent film actor, who was the leading hero of the early westerns. (Read Lillian Gish’s 1929 Britannica essay on silent film.) Hart was brought up in the Dakotas, where he lived until he was 16.

Mini Bio. A storybook hero, the original screen cowboy, ever forthright and honest, even when (as was often the case) he played a villain, William S. Hart lived for a while in the Dakota Territory, then worked as a postal clerk in New York City. In 1888 he began to study acting.
