Central Hålogaland (Norwegian: Midtre Hålogland) is a district of Northern Norway constituting the traditional districts of Ofoten, Lofoten, Vesterålen and Southern Troms. It has a population of 117,000, with the largest towns being Harstad (23,000) and Narvik (18,000).
Hålogaland is a drowned coastline containing extensive mountainous fjords and islands. It was a refuge for Viking ships as well as a way station for voyagers to the White Sea , which offered access to Russia.

Helgi, otherwise shown in Old Norse as Hölgi, is counted as the founder and namesake of Hålogaland. This possibly serves to cover the period in which tribal domination of the area becomes more organised as a pre-Viking kingdom. He is also noted as being the father of Þorgerðr (Thorgerdr).
It is the second-largest town in Troms county, after the city of Tromsø, and it is the largest town in Central Hålogaland. The town is located on the northeastern part of the large island of Hinnøya, along the Vågsfjorden.
