Gidget (/ ˈ ɡ ɪ dʒ ɪ t /) is a fictional character created by author Frederick Kohner (based on his teenage daughter, Kathy) in his 1957 novel, Gidget, the Little Girl with Big Ideas. The novel follows the adventures of a teenage girl and her surfing friends on the beach in Malibu .

The film—directed by Paul Wendkos—was the first of many screen appearances by the character Gidget, created by Hollywood writer Frederick Kohner (based on his daughter Kathy). The screenplay was written by Gillian Houghton, who was then head writer of the soap opera The Secret Storm , using the pen name Gabrielle Upton.
Frederick Kohner was born on September 25, 1905 in Teplitz-Schönau, Austria-Hungary [now Teplice, Czech Republic]. He was a writer and actor, known for Gidget (1965), Mad About Music (1938) and Hollywood Story (1951). He was married to Fritzi Klein. He died on July 7, 1986 in Los Angeles, California, USA.
